Best Time of Year to Stain a Fence or Deck in West Texas
The two prime windows for staining in Lubbock are April through June, and September through October. Here's why the rest of the year is risky.
Timing matters more in West Texas than in most places. Lubbock's combination of high heat, low humidity, and unpredictable wind means staining at the wrong time of year can ruin an otherwise perfect job. Here's a straight-up breakdown of when to schedule your project — and why the off-season windows fail.
The two prime windows
Spring (April through June) and early fall (September through October) are the two best windows for fence and deck staining in Lubbock. Daytime temperatures sit in the comfortable 60s to mid-80s, overnight lows stay above 50, and humidity is moderate enough that stain has time to penetrate properly before flashing off.
Of the two, fall is often the better window. Spring brings unpredictable wind that can blow dust and grit onto wet stain. By September, the wind has typically calmed, the worst summer heat has broken, and you're getting ahead of winter moisture.
Why summer is risky
From late June through August, Lubbock can hit 100°F+ for weeks at a time. At those temperatures, stain dries on the surface before it has time to penetrate the wood. The result is called "surface flashing" — the finish looks fine for a few weeks, then peels or wears unevenly within months because it never bonded properly.
Pros do work in summer, but it requires either very early morning starts (before 9am) or staining only the shaded sides of the fence. If a contractor offers to stain your sun-baked south fence at 2pm in July, that's a red flag.
Why winter is risky
Oil-based stains need temperatures above roughly 50°F during application and for at least 24-48 hours after. Lubbock winters aren't as severe as further north, but overnight freezes are common from late November through early March. Stain applied in the wrong temperature window can fail to cure properly and end up tacky, blotchy, or peeling within a season.
The other winter risk is moisture. Wood needs to be dry before staining — typically 48 hours of dry weather. Lubbock winters can string together cool, damp days that never give the wood enough time to dry out.
Booking realistically
If you're calling in March or August looking for a quote, expect a 1-3 week wait — those are the busy ramp-up periods. Schedule earlier and you'll have more flexibility on dates. The second-busiest period is right after spring rain knocks down the pollen, typically late April.
